School Report 2007-2008

Lake Academy, a Kindergarten to Grade Seven regional elementary school located in Fortune, Newfoundland, Canada, is dedicated to developing the whole child become a lifelong learner by meeting unique needs, developing self-worth and appreciation of others, and providing quality educational experiences in a positive, stimulating environment. It serves a student population of approximately 300 from the communities of Fortune, Grand Bank, and Grand Beach and is operated by the Eastern School District.

We think of our school as a comprehensive place where students come to learn. Our slogan "A Great Place to Learn" incorporates what we believe is an atmosphere that is a positive, stimulating, and rewarding learning environment for children.

At present, we have a faculty of twenty-two along with a number of support personnel, including students assistants, and we offer a range of programs including French, Physical Education, Technology, and Music. All students are mainstreamed yet we have Individual Student Support Plans for students. We also have a fairly comprehensive program meeting the individual needs of a number of mentally and physically challenged students.

Our vision for the future includes a full and comprehensive program for technology education. At this point in time our school is fully networked and offers wireless Internet access. Our Learning Resources Centre houses five IBM compatible computers used primarily for resource-based learning, utilizing the ATHENA electronic card catalogue system. Each classroom and learning centre has an IBM compatible networked computer. We also have a fully functional computer lab consisting of twenty-nine IBM compatible computers.
