James Newhook is said by the Newhook family to have been the first settler of Norman's Cove. However, the Temple's claim that George Temple settled before the Newhook's. Long Cove, just west of Norman's Cove, was settled mainly by people from Norman's Cove.
Norman's Cove-Long Cove appeared in the first census in 1836, with a population of 37. By 1874 there were 147 people, but that probably also included Chapel Arm. In 1886 the first family recorded from Long Cove was the Callan family.
The first road in Norman's Cove-Long Cove was made in 1929, the first car to be owned by a citizen was in 1931 and the road was first paved in 1973. The first TV was bought to Norman's Cove-Long Cove in 1958 and the first time electricity ran through the community was in 1960.
The Anglican Church was built in 1968, the Sports and Rec building, formerly the "Happy Club" , was built in 1950 and the swimming pool was built in 1977. The town council was started in 1970, and the Municipal building was built in 1976.
