3. Implementing new school policy - doors will not be opened for students until 8:15 a.m.
It has been an issue for quite some time where some students are dropped off at school before 8:15 a.m. Teachers do not have to be in the building until 8:15 a..m. which is 20 minutes before the school day begins. It is becoming a safety hazard when students are entering the building when no one is aware that they are in the building and before supervision begins. There has even been times when students are dropped off before any teachers arrive and the caretaker and volunteers are not legally responsible for providing supervision. Patti has made contact with the school’s SEO, Ray Noel,. And he s supportive of implementing this school policy as it directly relates to student safety. Beginning after the Easter holidays, Monday, May 2, 2011, the school doors will not be opened for students
until 8:15 a.m. Parents will be informed of this on each weekly newsletter until Easter break and a Synrevoice message will be sent to parents on the first day back to school after Easter holidays.
4. External Review dates - May 9 -11, 2011
The school’s Development Plan will be externally reviewed by members of an external review team. The team will be comprised of teachers and administrators. Part of the external review will be going over the school’s data collection as well as interviewing staff members and students. Some school council members will also be interviewed. Darrell Eddy, school development consultant with the Department of Education, will also be involved. Mr. Eddy will also be assisting the school with its development of the one year plan during a school based PD day on Tuesday, April 19, 2011.
5. Kiwanis details:
Both of the school choirs will be performing at the Kiwanis Music Festival on Wednesday, April 6, 2011. The festival takes place at Carbonear Collegiate. Details of the students’ performances are as follows: Primary students - leave school at 8:30 a.m. and performance at 9:45 a.m, we have to be there at 9:15 a.m. Elementary students - leave school at 3:15 p.m. and performance at 4:30, we have to be there at 4:00 p.m. Ms. Stokes has been working hard with the students in preparation for these performances.
6. New guidance counsellor starting
A replacement for our guidance counsellor, Jennifer Kelsey, has been hired. She will be off on maternity leave beginning on Friday, April 1, 2011. Her replacement is Megan Green and she begins her position on Monday, April 4, 2011.
7. Playground Committee
Cathy Reid reported that the Playground Committee will be meeting with the members from the local service group who are interested in raising funds for a playground. The two groups may partner in order to be more successful with their playground building efforts.
8. Masonic Lodge
The school was visited by two members of the Masonic Lodge as members of this organization wished to become more involved with schools in their membership area. Kinsley Welsh and Wayne George asked for ideas to get their members involved. Patti suggested that the lodge could sponsor a poster contest around the idea of being a good friend. This idea was accepted by the lodge members and they are proposing that each school pick two winners of this poster contest. The lodge would then hold a dinner for the winners, their parents, principals, and teacher sponsors to celebrate the winners. They would then make a calendar from these entries. It was also suggested that masonic members could also help out the schools by becoming judges for their Heritage Fairs.
9. Date for next meeting
The date for the next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 10, 2011.
